Local Nurseries
Below you will find a selection of local nurseries to connect with for your landscaping project. Note that the inclusion of a company on this list or within this website does not constitute an endorsement by the Town of Chevy Chase.
Pollinator Planters from Audubon: Build a habitat for butterflies at your front door with planters designed by Backyard Bounty and support our local Audubon Naturalist Society Sanctuary at Woodend at the same time.
A few notes for when you shop for native species:
-
If the nursery doesn’t specialize in native plants, ask if they have a special native plant section or means of identifying natives among their other plants.
-
If you’re not finding enough selection, let the nursery know. Too many nurseries don’t stock natives because they don’t think the demand is there.
-
Don’t forget about online sources. Make sure, though, that they are selling you something native to Maryland or the Mid-Atlantic.
-
Look for native plant sales, held annually in spring and fall, that bring several native plant growers to one location.
-
A note of caution: Ask questions at your nursery/source to ensure that your choices are not non-native invasive species that could spread beyond your garden and cause environmental damage. Many nurseries still sell non-native invasive species, such as Japanese barberry and English Ivy.
