A few notes for when you shop for native species: 

 

• If the nursery doesn’t specialize in native plants, ask if they have a special native plant section or means of identifying natives among their other plants. 

 

• If you’re not finding enough selection, let the nursery know.  Too many nurseries don’t stock natives because they don’t think the demand is there. 

 

• Don’t forget about online sources.  Make sure, though, that they are selling you something native to Maryland or the Mid-Atlantic. 

 

• Look for native plant sales, held annually in spring and fall, that bring several native plant growers to one location.  

 

• A note of caution: Ask questions at your nursery/source to ensure that your choices are not non-native invasive species that could spread beyond your garden and cause environmental damage.  Many nurseries still sell non-native invasive species, such as Japanese barberry and English Ivy.
